Assateague Island 2012

One of the boys favorite places to visit while living in Hershey, has been Assateague Island on the Delaware National Seashore. It is a national park where they have tried to preserve the beach in its natural form. There are wild horses that live there, and it is also a hot spot for wildlife. We usually see deer, horseshoe crabs, blue crabs, ghost crabs, and even caught some shrimp off the shore this year. This is our third camping trip to Assateague. We always camp right off the beach. The boys love playing on the dunes, and hunting for Horseshoe crabs and other marine life.  We usually spend time boogey boarding and skim boarding.  There are also a few nice hikes.  It is a beautiful place. 

The wild horses just wander through camp.  If you are not careful, they will try to eat your breakfast.  Last visit they made away with a pancake and eggs before we could stop them.  They have bloated bellies from the saltwater.  There was a new foal in camp this year.  Each female horse is only allowed to have one baby in its lifetime, to keep the population down.

One of the boys favorite places is the visitors center which has a touching pool with horshoe crabs and a few other crabs and sea creatures.
