Assateague Island 2011

Assateague Island is a national seashore a few hours away in Maryland.  It has wild horses that have lived there for over two hundred years. We went camping there for a few days during Mitch's recent vacation.  We were barely out of the truck before the kids were playing in the sand.  Lily wasn't so sure what she thought about sand on her feet, but once she saw the boys and their shovels she joined right in.

Our campsite was one dune away from the ocean.  As soon as the tent was up, the boys were in their swimsuits and off to the beach.  I need to mention that it was  so COLD, but that doesn't stop my boys!  As a side note, the pictures on the beach were taken with Mitch's cool waterproof digital camera.

One of the biggest draws of Assateague Island is the wild horses. Lily was in heaven! "Horsey!" We heard over and over. She wanted to pet these horses so badly, but these are not tame horses. There are warnings all over the island to keep your distance. But Lily can't read, so she would try as hard as she could to get to the horses. Here she is pulling on Mitch to get to a horse.

And here is Mitch bringing her back after she made a break for one of the horses.

Finally a horse she can pet. "soft" she says.

And then we had horses in our camp.

This one came right up to our table, considered eating the swim suits, then settled for eating our cheese. Mitch was able to pass the rest of the food into the truck before they were able to get anything else.

Mitch had food on the grill, so he continued to cook while to horses made themselves at home at our camp.
